Out of all the places where you can splurge on opportunities for photographers, Utah is king. As Tom Petty said “it’s good to be king.”
Utah truly is a photographers paradise considering all four of nature’s seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter are all displayed with robust colors.
For example think about the Wasatch-Cache National Forest which has many first class ski resorts such as Alta and Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and then Brighton and Solitude ski resorts in Big Cottonwood Canyon. During the summertime Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons have a plethora of hiking trails and camping sites.
The possibilities for photographers are numerous within only these two canyons, which are part of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. No where in the United States is the diversity of nature as vast as in the State of Utah. Within the state lines of Utah there are five National parks, not including the numerous state parks that exist too.
You could divide up Utah into two major spheres, the Northern and the Southern in terms of diverse nature induced fun. The northern part has lots of the Alpine mountains and the southern part has amazing red rock country which is unique not only to Utah, but the United States and world. So if you like the desert warmth or you’re a ski bunny you’re covered in Utah.
Utah is home to an amazing seven National Forests which is enough for any outdoor enthusiast. With all this taken in, the average to professional photographer has more options in Utah than any other state could offer.
Aside from the National parks and forests, Utah is also part of the Great Basin Region, which includes the ancient remnants of Lake Bonneville . With that said there are numerous amounts of water fronts for bird watching and bird photography. Namely of course the Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats west of Salt Lake City. According to Google Maps the Bonneville Salt Flats is 115 miles drive west of downtown Salt Lake, which would take approximately One hour and thirty six minutes.
The length of time it takes from Salt Lake City International Airport to the world renown ski slopes takes only forty-one minutes by car per Google Maps and is only thirty three miles away. What’s my point with all these miles and minutes by car? Exactly that, it doesn’t take hours but minutes from an urban landscape to nature’s paradise for people who have a driver’s license and car.
There are exceptions to the minutes from nature idea, if you’re planning visiting Bonneville Salt Flats or Southern Utah, but for any kind of forestry alpine scenery within half an hour you can begin shooting spectacular photographs.
So in conclusion, if you’re a photographer of any experience level, there is a place for you in the State of Utah. Five amazing National Parks, Seven National Forests and forty-three state parks. The amount of parks and forests would be enough for many, but truly the diversity in eco-systems is if not more impressive. As Petty said, “It’s good to be king”.
